Celebrate the artistry of Gabriel Schwabe as he brings Tchaikovsky’s cello works to life in this vivid programme of Variations on a Rococo Theme and Pezzo capriccioso, restoring the composer’s original intentions after decades of altered editions. With the Sinfonieorchester Aachen under Christopher Ward, Schwabe also performs his own arrangements of the Canzonetta from the Violin Concerto and the Valse sentimentale, revealing Tchaikovsky’s lyricism in fresh colours. The album concludes with the rarely heard second version of the Romeo and Juliet fantasy overture, a romantic coda that showcases Schwabe’s opulent tone, refined phrasing and confident command of the cello–orchestra dialogue.
