Participants heard from three experts who each gave unique insight into how we should consider nature when constructing both on land and sea.
Fokko van der Goot, Senior Environmental Engineer at Boskalis, a maritime infrastructure company, and Programme Manager at environmental engineering company EcoShape, spoke about his project titled Building Nature with Indonesia. Local farmers of fish and shrimp ponds in Java, Indonesia, were taught how to arrange coastal field schools. They also integrated mangrove trees in the area, in order to stabilize the muddy environment. This not only resulted in a healthier coast, but increased farmer income by 3x.
Next up to speak was Edmundo Colón Izquierdo, the principal and co-founder of multidisciplinary company ECo, a landscape architect and associate professor at Puerto Rico’s landscape architecture school. Edmundo focused on two major hurricanes in 2017 that demolished all infrastructure in Puerto Rico. As a response, Edmundo and environmental engineers created the Alianza la cuenca del río piedras group. This environmentally-focused alliance meets with local community groups in Puerto Rico, engineers from the army corps and politicians in order to rebuild infrastructure sustainably.
Lastly, Gena Wirth, Design Principal at SCAPE Landscape Architecture, discussed nature-based design specifically as it relates to invertebrate species. While small and seemingly insignificant, invertebrates are extremely important to all life on Earth. They aid in pivotal biological processes such as pollination, pest control, and medicine and research. Invertebrates are at risk, as many landscape designs such as lawns and mulch beds are harmful to the over one million invertebrate species. However, landscape design that supports invertebrates is possible! Gena provided examples of this by showcasing projects from a design class she taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. For example, one project proposed that homeowners with a backyard could devote 30% of their land to more diverse insect habitats.Nature Inclusive Design Webinar: Innovation in Land-Water InterfacesECOncrete2022-06-29 | In this webinar, three experts highlight best practices and examples from across the globe, showing how to encourage resilient, nature inclusive design. Our vision drove us to develop and pioneer the revolutionary concrete-based technology that brings concrete to life.ECOncrete’s articulated concrete mattressesECOncrete2019-05-07 | As over half of the world’s population resides around our coastlines, along with the threats of sea level rise and extreme weather conditions, the need for armoring coastal areas is growing rapidly. These coastal defense systems include breakwaters, seawalls and revetments. ECOncrete’s articulated concrete mattresses are designed to provide coastline stabilization, erosion control, and protection of offshore infrastructure while supporting growth of rich flora and fauna and enhancing biodiversity. The articulated mattresses, each weighing a few metric tons, are made up of hundreds of individual concrete precast units laced together, designed to comply with strict marine construction standards and achieve targeted biological goals. As of all other ECOncrete’s products (a FAST-COMPANY 2019 Honoree), The bio enhancing articulated concrete mattresses differ from traditional concrete units in three aspects, that together contribute to its environmental and ecological uplift; Material composition, Surface texture and Macro design. ECOncrete’s patented admix is designed to mitigate the effect of Portland cement and other concrete additives, and to mimic characteristics of natural substrate. ECOncrete technology has been fully tested in both temperate and tropical waters, showing excellent biological and structural results. The rough surface texture of the units as well as the patented macro design support marine life by providing various sized niches and crevices, similar to those found in natural environments. One of the innovations of the bio-enhancing articulated marine mattress units is in the manufacturing process, as this is the first time ECOncrete’s patented technology has been used in a dry cast system for mass manufacturing, allowing for economically efficient production. Furthermore, this process allows for manufacturing in concrete plants worldwide minimizing transportation costs and CO2 emissions of both the raw materials and the final product.
Pilots of the bio-mats have been placed and monitored in New Jersey and Florida (USA), showing excellent results both in terms of coastal protection and in ecological uplift of subtidal and intertidal areas. As analyzed in these pilot sites, the mats permute the settlement of calcitic depositing organisms such as oysters and tube worms and taking advantage of a natural process called bio protection, these calcitic deposits create a protective layer, strengthening the concrete and lowering maintenance costs.
Following the pilots testing, the units have been released to market in July of 2018. The nature of the product, composed of multiple concrete units, allows for tailor made adjustments to the product size, and orientation that accommodate specific project needs, saving installation time and costs.
ECOncrete’s articulated concrete mattresses were chosen to be a part of the USA pavilion in the 2018 Vince Architectural Biennale, where they were recognized for changing the way we are developing our coastlines, one brick at a time, as they bring concrete to life. The unit design is fully scalable, and the product can be easily manufactured worldwide in a competitive price. Taking its aspiration from nature, this unique product opens a new era of coastal construction, where sustainable infrastructure provides a living solution to one of the world’s greatest challenges.i24NEWS interview with ECOncretes CEO, DR. Shimrit FinkelECOncrete2019-03-12 | Concrete is the most consumed material in the world after water. If you look into places where there is concrete in the water, you’ll see that marine life is suffering, the fish is no longer to around, corals are disappearing and the concrete is lifeless for decades.
And that’s where ECOncrete comes in to solve the lifeless concrete problem. Dr. Iso Sella and dr. Shimrit Perkol Finkel spent the majority of their lives researching, studying, diving and learning about the oceans and after many many years, they came up with An amazing technology... that turns concrete to life. It’s a unit built with patented added materials. It’s designed with tiny holes for the small fish to live in them, it's eco-friendly and it’s even stronger than normal concrete.
