# 48 - Wood Turning - Segmented Purple Heart & African Blackwood Kennett B Turned 2020-04-26 | This weeks project is one I have avoided, ignored, attempted, failed, modified, changed and just down right struggled with for almost a year. The brainstorm for it began when a good friend provided a large stock pot for me to boil bowls. She asked for a utensil holder for her kitchen counter. Initially we thought about one piece of wood, then I thought segmenting would be fun 🤣 so that’s the direction we went. The best part about it is the learning that went on through the process. I learned a whole lot, and A LOT of my ideas didn’t work! But in the end YouTube and plenty of time watching and learning prevailed. #44 - Wood Turning - African Blackwood stopper with Celtic knot - attempt Kennett B Turned 2020-03-21 | With recent events I have found myself with nothing but time on my hands. In the last couple days I have spent upwards of 12 hrs in the shop roughing bowls, turning pens this stopper and prepping projects. That said I’m going to make every effort to put out new videos as frequently as practical as I’m sure many folks are stuck as well!This project was something I’ve been wanting to try for quite some time. I had a failed attempt a month or so ago on a pen which got me to looking around YouTube. About that time Huw Davies put out a video of how he makes his pens. After a successful pair of pen attempts I decided to tackle a stopper on camera. This is a piece of African Blackwood with ash veneer. It’s turned on a mandrel I received from PSI in a Niles stopper kit. # 42 Wood Turning - My BIGGEST turn yet! Kennett B Turned 2020-03-01 | I have been planning this project for a little while but avoiding it due to its size. This piece came from the boxelder I milled with the chainsaw back in the summer. It was the largest piece that I salvaged. The blank started out 16” wide and 3.25” thick. It was turned outboard on my central machine 12-36 lathe. It’s finished with mylands sanding sealer and Ack’ Abrasive and polish/restoring pastes. # 29 - Wood Turning - The Maker’s Bowl - Walnut & Resin Kennett B Turned 2019-08-18 | Well finally I’m able to get the video edited out and uploaded! I apologize to those that have come to expect a weekly upload, unfortunately (or fortunately 🤪) the bill paying business has grown busy in the past few weeks. Finding time at the lathe has been difficult, let alone editing a video out. Anyway no need to tell a sob story...This weeks project is the Maker’s Bowl. A bowl that embodies what we do and who we are. It is going to be used as a show piece for our table at craft fairs so customers are aware of what we can do. Hopefully opening up more opportunity for custom commissioned pieces. The project started out with a 12” walnut blank from turningblanks.net, some backwards letters and a router. The green Alumilite resin was poured from the bottom to save resin. The piece was finished off with Acks abrasive paste and polishing/restoring paste. #28 - Wood Turning - Walnut & Birds Eye maple platter Kennett B Turned 2019-08-06 | Little bit late but life has been busy. We will more than likely be not be uploading this coming weekend and the week is shaping up to keep me out of the shop 😢. This blank started out a a walnut plank I picked up out of the “off cuts” bin at Hearne Hardwoods! The birds eye was a section of the board we bought that had a large knot dead center. I ripped a slice off each side and laminated into the walnut after ripping it into thirds. #27 - Wood Turning - Cherry & Resin Black Eyed Susan Kennett B Turned 2019-07-29 | My wife’s favorite flower is the black eyed Susan. This is my attempt at making a flower for her. The project was inspired by all of the resin hybrid work Doug does over on the Pohl Barn channel (link below) and the method Andy used to create his “Manehole Bowl” over on ARC Wood craft (link below)! #26 - Wood Turning - Purple Heart and Red Oak Chevron Kennett B Turned 2019-07-21 | This weeks project took quite a lot of calculating (much of it incorrect). I took pieces of Purple Heart and Red Oak and laminated the boards together at to make a rhombus. Let the glue set and sliced it up into 3/4” boards and re-glued those in the desired pattern. Trimmed it down and slapped it on the lathe. The resultant bowl turned out awesome! #24 - Wood Turning - Amazing Black Walnut crotch bowl! Kennett B Turned 2019-07-06 | This weeks video has been one I have been waiting for for quite some time. We harvested this tree due to a conflict with some buildings and parking areas in the winter of 2016 or 2017. I cut two blanks in December last year (2018) and they sat on my shop floor for a bit. Finally I roughed both bowls out on January 8th. After drying in my basement this bowl was finally ready to finish! It’s sibling was finished a couple months ago and it did not disappoint! #21 - Wood Turning - Particle board glue up... will it work Kennett B Turned 2019-06-22 | I had a piece of particle board left over from a bench build ten years ago... no clue why I saved it but I was curious. So I glued five 11” square pieces together, cut a circle and mounted it on the lathe. I used a face plate because I didn’t trust its integrity and CA’ed the mortise twice in hopes we wouldn’t have a flying particle board bowl. #14 - Wood Turning - Antler Pen Kennett B Turned 2019-04-19 | Decided to do a smaller project this week while setting up a few larger items for the coming weeks. This is an antler shed pen. The antler was provided to me by a good friend that walks around the woods and collects them. I had minor issues using DNA to clean the blank and had to use a medium CA to fill a few small voids that it created. But all in all it ended up turning out great. It was intended as a Retirement gift so I forgot the still pictures... so I turned the second blank I made in the beginning so I could have some stills for the video. #11 - Wood Turning - Hybrid Oak platter Kennett B Turned 2019-03-23 | This was my first adventure in turning a hybrid wood/resin project. A couple mistakes that I learned from and a few processes I probably won’t short cut again, namely the forstner bit. The failed first resin casting I’ll chock up to trying to fit the casting in after work one evening. I rushed it, didn’t look at the night time temps and didn’t have time to turn in the garage while it was setting so I could run the heat just a bad decision. I didn’t video the second casting mainly because I wasn’t sure what exactly the issue was. I moved the pressure pot into the house, insured the compressor was drained of water and kept it warm. #7 - Acrylic ice cream paddle and bottle stopper turned Kennett B Turned 2019-02-21 | This is the making of an ice cream paddle and a bottle stopper out of an acrylic swirl blank. The bottle stopper was an extra because I didn’t want an 6” handle on the scoop and didn’t want to waste the small piece of acrylic. I personally don’t care for this acrylic as it is extremely hard. Even the Easywood NR cutter didn’t want to shape it. Ended up doing most of the shaping with a Ci3 strait cutter. #6 - Wood Turning - Mahogany platter Kennett B Turned 2019-02-17 | In this video I took a 1 1/8” mahogany plank, cut almost an 11” circle and turned a platter. Due to its thickness I had to mount it between centers so I had a small issue with the tail stock being loose after stalling the work piece. I was able to tighten it up and keep turning. #5 - Wood turning - Walnut and oak turned bowl Kennett B Turned 2019-02-11 | I glued this blank up long before I began videoing my work so I apologize for not showing how I did that portion of the project. Basically I cut squares of walnut and red oak, glued them together with tight bond III wood glue added a waste block on the bottom and let it sit on the shelf for a couple months! This is the second one of these I have done and I like this one better as it has 3 walnut layers instead of the two of it’s sister.
