One of these axioms was considerably more complicated than the others and seemed to some to be likely provable as a theorem from the other four more natural postulates. But no ancient Greek was ever able to prove Euclid's fifth postulate and this question persisted for over 2000 years until it was finally resolved in the 19th century CE. It took 2000 years to confirm that indeed you cannot prove Euclid's fifth postulate from the other four, but this proof resulted in us learning of another type of plane geometry that is completely consistent and satisfies the first four of Euclid's postulates but not the fifth. This type of geometry is called hyperbolic geometry and weird stuff happens there: triangles have less than 180 degrees, similar triangles are congruent, and rectangles are nowhere to be found. How Mathematical Induction Can Play Tricks on You! Scholar Sauce 2023-07-12 | You may have heard the phrase before that "That's a horse of a different color!" Well, I'm here to tell you that there's no such thing (well, sort of...). In this video we learn about mathematical induction and how it can be used to prove that statements that depend on a natural number are true for all natural numbers n. Induction does this by showing that a base case is true, say the case where n=1, and then proves an induction step where the fact being true for n=k implies that it is also true for n=k+1. Then the two work together where the induction step applied to the base case implies that the n=2 case works and then the induction step applied to the n=2 case implies that the n=3 is true and so on. In this video we talk about these ideas in a fun and engaging way before talking about the potential pitfalls of incorrect induction arguments that can result in incorrect conclusions. Is π Really Wrong? Scholar Sauce 2023-06-28 | In 2001, Dr. Bob Palais wrote a really fun article called "Pi is Wrong!" In it, he argued that instead of π, which is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, we should use the ratio of a circle's circumeference to its radius as the circle constant. This constant, which is equal to 2π, was later dubbed τ by Michael Hartl in a 2010 article that he wrote called The Tau Manifesto. Dr. Palais' paper launched an international debate about whether we should continue to use π or switch to τ as the circle constant. Dr. Palais has since been referred to as the Godfather of the τ movement.Since 2016, Dr. Palais and Dr. Alan Parry have held several debates on this topic as I think that we should not abandon π so easily. In today's video, Dr. Parry takes on the Godfather of τ in a debate that was filmed on Pi Day 2023 and is being released on Scholar Sauce on Tau Day 2023. We hope that you enjoy it.
