I've had a hard time getting my work down while my smartphone beckons to me. I've found that keeping a pocket notebook system which incorporates the best of Cal Newport's timeblocking method with the best of Ryder Carroll's Bullet Journal method can help me stop mindlessly scrolling on my phone and actually get my work done. In this video I go over some of the tenets of digital minimalism, I lay out the major ideas in the philosophy of technology, and then I show you how to incorporate time-blocking into your own pocket bullet journal.

In his 1965 book, Dune, Frank Herbert gives a profound warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence. What makes Herbert's warning so profound is its uniqueness. Most science fiction stories deal with the AI control problem which carry implicit warnings for the reader about the danger of self-aware and super intelligent AI systems which become unaligned with the values of their human creators. Herbert, on the other hand, warns us about the AI creators rather than their artifacts. Perhaps we shouldn't worry as much about Frankenstein's monster as much as Dr. Frankenstein himself.

In this video I introduce how I use commonplace books as a commonplace for collecting ideas about a particular topic, including my own ideas, with the goal of becoming an expert on that topic. By taking marginal notes in the books, essays, journal articles, etc., and moving the most important notes to a commonplace book and by taking notes from audio mediums like podcasts, courses, and YouTube presentations in your commonplace book, you can create a one-stop-shop for building expertise.

I've been journaling and using commonplace books intentionally and daily for more than 10 years. I've found commonplace books and compendiums to be the best form of journaling for growing as an intellectual, for memorizing quotes, and for collecting your thoughts on a particular topic. In this vid I cover two major ways to keep a commonplace book: 1. Commonplace for Quotes 2. Commonplace for Ideas Once you understand the distinction you can start planning your own style and start growing exercising your own intellectual habits.
