My Arcoaire 90% efficient furnace (Model H9MPT075F14C1) started short cycling and showing a blinking 4-light code, which usually means overheating or motor issues.
I noticed a weird burnt smell in the house — like a pan left on the stove too long. So I went down to the basement, removed the covers, taped the safety switch (for testing only), and started watching the system run.
My Nest Thermostat even threw an E74 error (no power on RH) during the cycle. After observing carefully, I realized the blower motor wasn’t running as strong as it should.
That’s when I grabbed my Tesmen D300 clamp meter to test the run capacitor (10 MFD ±5%) — and it only read 2.1 µF. Bingo. The capacitor had failed.
I replaced it with a new one rated the same, tested it again — 11.3 µF — perfect! The furnace now runs smooth, quiet, and no more short cycling.
