Sticking pencils and food skewers through plastic bags and balloons has been a common and popular activity for students of all ages over the years. It is a nice lead in to talk about polymers. Once this is done with bags they are pretty much done for but what happens after you pull the skewers out of the balloons, the balloons deflate and that's the end of them. Here is an additional lesson that can be used to generate interest in how fiber in food may be used as a sealant to reseal the balloons and keep it inflated. The demonstration shows commercial products for resealing tires that have gone flat behave and is even similar to the clotting of blood. This can be a worthwhile activity for students to explore and discover other materials that behave the same way.
