Jessica Buscher, a teacher from Sherwood, Oregon, is still processing the harrowing experience that nearly cost her and her family their lives. What started as a two-day hike along the Grand Canyon's famous 24-mile Rim to Rim Trail quickly turned into a battle for survival.
Twelve miles into their trek, Jessica, her sister, and her sister’s friend found themselves trapped in a narrow section of the trail known as "The Box" as a devastating flash flood ripped through the canyon. With a massive 15-foot wall of water rushing toward them, they had only seconds to react—scrambling onto a tiny, narrow rock ledge to escape the raging torrent.
Jennifer shares her incredible first-hand story of standing on that ledge, holding her sister, praying to survive, and the bittersweet relief of their ultimate rescue by helicopter.
While Jennifer’s group made it home safely, the tragedy has left a devastating mark: two men in another group they tried to meet up with lost their lives, and another remains missing.
