This uses the same capture method as the Pokemon Yellow video from 10 years ago (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEKoxGs3MAE).
Most of the dialogue in the game is not skipped and should remain readable for the viewer, making this more like a longplay than anything else. I also go through all routes (even when unnecessary), however, I do not battle all trainers, nor do I do any particular grinding. Generally, this video can be used as a guide or walkthrough. Several dry runs of the game were done before any serious recording attempts occurred. The roster of six Pokemon was planned out from the start and had actually been written several years ago.
Some rules for the run are:
- Always use your starter
- Defeat or catch Suicune.
- Do not go out of the way to grind for levels.
- Use six Pokemon somewhat evenly. Do not just use one or two over-leveled Pokemon.
- Do certain side objectives.
- Keep shift on.
- Dont skip the main dialogue.
Shift is used over Set for the same reasons as Yellow. However, there will be at least one Set challenge video for a battle in another Gen 2 video, using Pokemon Silver instead.
I chose not to do both Johto/Kanto in one sitting, as it would have certainly surpassed the 12 hour limit at the pacing I chose. Otherwise, it would have been considered, though arduous.
Despite Johto in GSC often cited as being short or dry, it has more content than Gen 1 Kanto alone, and takes roughly the same amount of time at a normal pacing. I also do not do all of the side content Johto has to offer in this video. Theyll be done in a different video, separate from the Kanto post-game.
Lastly, the games color scheme is slightly softened. For some reason the direct capture from a GBC made the colors look more strange than usual (more than looking at GSC on an AGS 101 GBA SP model, which is still aesthetically pleasing, or even an emulator). So capture settings were adjusted based on someone elses settings for GBC color adjustments (but for straight up color palette adjustments, we just replicated the results with regular color settings on the custom capture software that we use with the VGA cable that lets us record this). So the palette/colors are a little easier on the eyes but nothing too different from what people are used to seeing; the game is still more vivid looking than on an actual OEM non-lit GBC screen, so it is not Accurate but still closer to accurate than the raw colors. Its difficult to determine what accurate colors are for GBC games, since its likely different based on the development team, the art directors choices regarding how to approach the washed out old GBC screen, and the game itself, as well as the fact that not every GBC screen may share the same level of washed out color. Im uncertain if Ill continue doing this for other GBC games, or if Ill use the same settings if I use adjustments.")
