With Zero-Ticking crops patched, cactus are no longer the go-to furnace xp farm smeltable item. That means for 1.16 we need to find something else that is easy to get in large quantities and fully automatic. Using Cobblestone as that item gives s secondary benefit in that after the Cobblestone is smelted into Stone, you can smelt that Stone into Smooth Stone giving you this double layer furnace xp farm design. It is slower than the cactus since you get less xp per item smelted, but since it is 100% fully automatic that doesn't matter all that much as you just let this run in the background until you need the xp.
