The corals captured lit up fluorescently as their color left them slowly but surely. The crew captured the moment using their underwater SVX camera system—a technology that captures 360-degree imagery underwater. “In the past people simply haven’t gone to the right location at the right time,” says Vevers. “I was blown away… I’ve never seen something so beautiful, but it’s dying.
A recent survey of some areas of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef suggested that more than a third of the corals in the region might have died, leaving a marine graveyard behind.
“The soft corals were just decomposing—animals literally dripping off the rocks,” says Vevers of his dive in the Great Barrier Reef. “The most horrifying part was that we just absolutely stank of rotting animals. That’s when you really realize that reefs are made up of billions of animals.”
We've now lost 50% of the world's coral reefs according to a doc on Netflix, 'Chasing Coral' 2017. Coral basically live forever as long as their environment allows them to. All of the world's coral is projected to be dead by 2030.
SPOILER ALERT: At 32:00 min. left on the Chasing Coral Doc, the dive team is sent to New Caledonia because the coral is doing something it's never done anywhere before - it's glowing. They say they think it's that the coral are creating their own chemical sunscreen to protect themselves from global warming and that is what's making them glow.

Some are bright blue, others are purple, some are a light lavender, others, pink, and still others are bright yellow; all in neon, glowing, fluorescent colors. Then, over the next two months, the time-lapse photography shows them bleaching into a bright white, after awhile, they turn murky, ucky, brownish, and are covered in slimy orangey, brown algae waving in the water. It looks like a gloomy graveyard. Eventually, some of the corals become a barren rock face, while others look like a dirty bony graveyard.
On another dive, the diver says, "...the coral is dead as far you can see." It's called rapid tissue necrosis. When the coral reefs are all gone, we'll have lost a quarter of all life in the ocean.
A biologist explains, "This is the beginning of an entire collapse of an ecosystem. We're talking about the fact that entire classes of organisms will go extinct."
