Is the Fujifilm Eterna 55 actually a RED killer? I finally got the chance to put Fuji’s first cinema camera to the test on a professional shoot, and as a long-time RED fanboy, I have some surprising thoughts on how it holds up.
In this video, I am joined by director Vincent Powell and DP Deonte as we run camera tests for our upcoming feature film. We were looking for a specific look to differentiate two different time periods in the movie, which led us to compare the medium format Fujifilm Eterna 55 against the RED Raptor XE. While I still love my RED, the Eterna 55 brings some unique features to the table that are hard to ignore.
We dive deep into the technical side of things, including why the Fuji rep recommended shooting in 4K 4x3 mode instead of 8K for the best results. We also explore the physical design, like the dual-sided menu screens that make life easier for both the operator and the AC. One of the biggest takeaways was the difference in sensor performance. The Eterna’s medium format sensor offers a look that is distinct from full-frame, but we also had to weigh that against the RED’s superior dynamic range and global shutter performance.
Whether you are a Fuji fan or a RED loyalist, this comparison shows just how far digital cinema technology has come. I also address the rumors about this being a rehoused GFX camera and why that couldn't be further from the truth. This is a dedicated cinema machine designed for high-end productions.
