Joel Fuhrman has spent more than a decade warning vegans that if they don’t take DHA, they’re risking dementia and Parkinson’s.
In 2019 he put the starkest version in writing. He wrote that he hoped to reach the doctors recommending low-fat vegan diets “before it is too late, so they do not become demented as they age, like many of their followers have.”
I called him out on that sentence at the time, and he responded to me in the article itself. Sometime after that, the sentence came down. The article is still up. The sentence is gone.
The claim isn’t. He’s still making it in interviews.
So I went looking for the evidence. I read the randomized trials on omega-3 supplements and brain health, including one that measured DHA in spinal fluid to make sure it was actually reaching people’s brains.
Here’s what those trials found.
