For years, the Bureau of Land Management has dealt with the challenge of fighting progressively larger wildfires. During the summer of 2017, a fuel break on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management was tested by two fires that merged into the Centennial Fire on June 28. The fire was contained the following day; however, during that short period of time the fire consumed a total of 18,660 acres. Fire modeling showed that without the fuel breaks in place, the Centennial Fire could have grown to roughly 142,000 acres in two burn periods.
