Whether it is outside or on your window pane on a cold morning, or in your freezer, frost is ice crystals that form directly from moisture in air, through the process of deposition. Frost can form on the ground or on a vehicle even when the air temperature is above freezing, because cold air settles to the ground when winds are calm, and metal and glass can cool down faster than air.
Frost is a part of the water cycle. Just as ice can form from vapor in air, ice can also slowly turn directly back into vapor, without melting first. That is called sublimation.
