We build a log cabin, suitable for many 25-28mm frontier settings. Using simple methods we achieve a very attractive cabin that any settler would be proud to inhabit. At least until someone who may be a tad hostile sets fire to it. Or it accidentally catches fire. Or my uncle sets it on fire for the insurance. But that would totally never happen...
**UPDATE** Some individuals have sagely nodded and pronounced the wooden chimney to be bad and terrible...but that's how it was done. Lined with cob (clay/straw) for extra protection, this was meant to get the house through the first winter or so - then, if you were still alive and the place had not burned down, the settlers would gather rocks or make proper bricks for a more permanent structure. This log method would also work a treat for soldiers temporary winter quarters of the period.
