Illegal push- and pull backs, arbitrary detention, enslavement, sexual violence, and deaths at sea and on land: these are just some of the serious crimes and human rights violations people on the move face in Libya, Tunisia and the Mediterranean.
On 18 October 2024, ECCHR co-hosted the event "From Tripoli to Berlin - Evacuation, not Externalisation! The Right to Move against an EU for the Few" that brought together human rights defenders from Libya, the civil fleet, human rights lawyers and political actors. Our goal is to build strong solidarity structures and campaigns to support the rights of people on the move through North Africa and the Mediterranean.
„What migrants and refugees experience in Libya has to be recognized as crimes against humanity. When exploring responsibilities for these crimes, we identified a common plan between Libyan and European actors to keep migrants and refugees out of Europe. That means, EU actors are actually co-perpetrators“ (Allison West – Legal Advisor ECCHR)
