After filming the Smoky Mountain Big Rig Showdown in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Chris spotted Austin Kiser rolling down I-40 in his recently purchased 1996 Peterbilt 379 which turned into a ride along and a firsthand look at what his truck does every day.
Austin bought the Pete because he needed a shorter truck for local hauling. The 379 is powered by a 5EK CAT, backed by a 13-speed transmission, and rides on a 270-inch wheelbase. Austin pulls a 32ft MAC dump trailer hauling gravel, sand, rock, and other materials to asphalt plants around Tennessee and North Carolina.
Chris rides with Austin as he delivers a load of 78-size gravel to an asphalt plant near Knoxville, hear that classic 5EK CAT working through the gears, and take a closer look at the truck’s clean but practical interior completed by the crew at Semi Casual.
Austin also shares the history of Kiser Trucking, a family operation that dates back to the late 1960s or early 1970s and has grown to approximately 40 to 45 trucks. He talks about growing up around the business, driving for his father, owning his own truck, and choosing local work so he can spend more time with his growing family.
We also get Austin’s thoughts on the first Smoky Mountain Big Rig Showdown and why he believes the event will be even bigger next year.
