From Statsd To OpenTelemetry: Atlassian's Metrics Platform Migration at Scale - Iris Grace Endozo & Farzad Vazirnia, Atlassian
OpenTelemetry has become the industry standard for Observability: a single, vendor-neutral framework for metrics, traces and logs backed by CNCF. But adopting it is a different story when you already have a legacy but stable
observability platform that "works" from collection to pipeline processing to storage.
At Atlassian, the Observability team ran statsd as a bespoke metrics pipeline for years: high-performance statsd servers collecting and aggregating metrics from around 100k hosts across 14 regions. It served the team well but the cracks were showing: UDP-only ingestion, no support for traces or logs and standards increasingly out of step with where the ecosystem was heading.
This talk walks through why the team migrated to an OpenTelemetry Collector-based pipeline and landed everything in their metrics backend without downtime or data loss. It covers how they executed at scale and the strategy for full OTLP-native adoption and what it unlocks for unified Observability.
