What does it mean to discover not simply what you can study, but what you are called to do?
In this reflection, Maya, a Ralston College graduate, recounts her path from studying Latin at Hillsdale College to finding a vocation in education through Ralston's immersive humanities program. Inspired by the example of her teachers and the living practice of learning ancient languages, she describes introducing middle-school students to the opening lines of the Aeneid, discovering the joy of teaching through stories, and seeing how the classical tradition becomes real when it is shared.
This autumn, she begins a new chapter as a Rome Fellow with the Paideia Institute, where she will continue her study of Latin, Italian, and the history of the Eternal City before guiding students through the places where so much of the Western tradition was formed.
At Ralston College, education is not merely the transmission of information but an invitation into friendship with the past and a preparation for carrying that inheritance into the future.
