Lecture by Oliver Steinbock on the development of machine learning, delivered at the 2026 AI Bootcamp of Florida State University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Oliver Steinbock is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University. In this largely math-free lecture, he traces the development of machine learning from early ideas about artificial neurons and perceptrons through multilayer neural networks, activation functions, backpropagation, deep learning, transformers, and modern large language models. The lecture also explores connections and differences between artificial neural networks and biological brains.

This lecture was the fourth introductory presentation at the 2026 FSU Chemistry & Biochemistry AI Bootcamp, which introduced modern AI to graduate students and other members of the FSU community. The bootcamp was organized by Professors Wen Zhu and Oliver Steinbock.
