Iowa had a lot of railroad lines and most are gone now, including mainlines of the Milwaukee Road and the Chicago Great Western.  It is fortunate the Iowa Interstate was created to keep the old Rock Island Line across Iowa in operation.   A true "regional", the road invented a color scheme that attractively combines the school colors of the two largest public universities in the state: the cardinal and gold of Iowa State University and the black and gold of the University of Iowa.  It has evolved into a dynamic, interesting rail line.   Captured by J. D. Larson, the period of time that is covered in this production covers a real transition for the Iowa Interstate Railroad from 1999 to 2010. Our coverage of the IAIS is in and around Des Moines.

The Iowa Interstate was formed on November 2nd, 1984, using former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific tracks between Chicago, Illinois, and Omaha, Nebraska.
The common power in this era of the IAIS were several older GP7, 8, 9 and 10’s. Also, many GP38 and GP38-2’s were common. They also ran a few MLW M-420R’s. The video concludes when the IAIS took delivery of new GEVO locomotives.
Take a step back in time to see why this regional flourishes today!
