Hybrid varieties are shaping modern agriculture. They impress with particularly high, stable yields, improved disease resistance, and quality traits such as good digestibility.
Hybrid varieties result from a special breeding method: the crossing of homozygous parental lines, also known as inbred lines. Through this type of multiplication, each individual seed is a nearly identical genetic copy. In this way, the desired traits of the parental lines are preserved for subsequent crosses.
“By combining two homozygous inbred lines optimally, we achieve the heterosis effect. This results in significantly more productive and resilient offspring – known as hybrids,” explains Heiko Kraus, Head of Global Product Development at KWS.
