We leave Horn, Austria and point our trikes toward the Danube River, knowing that once we reach it, the hard climbing days are finally behind us.
This ride is all about transition.
The rolling hills of northern Austria slowly give way to riverside paths, wide open views, and the unmistakable calm of the Danube Cycle Path. Along the way we pass castles, vineyards, rail-side roads, and villages that feel distinctly Austrian — pastel-painted plaster homes, no vinyl siding, no brick obsession, just quiet confidence and long-term thinking.
Granden starts noticing something interesting: the houses are bigger here than in Czechia. The architecture feels more settled. More permanent. It’s a small detail, but those details tell stories.
We encounter roadside wine vending machines built entirely on public trust, almost eat a spindle tree fruit (almost), battle spider webs at speed, and roll past the famously unused Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant — a symbol of a country that changed its mind and stuck with it.
By the end of the day, we reach Tulln and camp beside the river, tired, happy, and ready for the final glide into Vienna the next morning.
This is why we ride.
