A team of Indian high school students has won the prestigious Beamline for Schools competition organised by CERN in Geneva, earning an all-expenses-paid two-week opportunity to conduct research and learn from leading physicists and engineers.
Selected from 712 proposals submitted by teams across 89 countries, Team attoPION travelled to CERN to work hands-on with particle detectors and conduct experiments using a pion beam.
The students explored the Large Hadron Collider, CERN's underground facilities and particle physics laboratories, while learning how detectors such as scintillators, calorimeters and photomultiplier tubes help scientists study particle behaviour.
Their research focused on shooting a pion beam at targets such as graphite and aluminium to study particle interactions and detect the resulting particles.
The experience also gave the young researchers an opportunity to meet CERN scientists, visit underground experimental facilities and showcase their work to international ambassadors.
From being beginners in particle physics when they applied to conducting experiments at CERN, the students say their journey carries a simple message: don't be afraid to apply, learn and explore.
