Tully Potter: "The Kreisler recording was made at a time when the great violinist Ruggiero Ricci was retired and spending his days in his publisher's outer office, where visiting fellow fiddlers would pay court to him (some said he was getting away from his wife Harriet, who had a fearsome reputation).

"Decca did a lot of promotion," Ricci said. "They put out a long-playing record - I don't think it was commercial, I think it was just promotional, and I still have a copy with an interview with me about Kreisler. They talked to me for about half an hour. I played an all-Kreisler concert in New York and he [Kreisler] said, 'I don't know why anyone would play a whole evening of my music' because he was very modest. He said a lot of crazy stuff. He would say: 'Now you mustn't pay any attention to my fingerings, because I never could play in the first position.'"

"The Kreisler album was highly personal to Mr. Ricci," Gregory Zayia says. "He regarded Kreisler and Heifetz as his two primary influences, and this album was meant to be released around the same time as a tribute concert Mr. Ricci arranged in New York in Kreisler's honour (at which he played Tartini's 'Devil's Trill' sonata and Paganini D major Concerto in Kreisler's arrangements). Kreisler was in serious decline, having already survived a horrific street accident and being practically blind and deaf. He could not attend the concert, which Mr. Ricci deeply regretted. However, Mr. Ricci went to see him at the office of his publisher, Charles Foley, and played Kreisler's Recitativo and Scherzo-Caprice for him privately. They spent a long time in conversation that day; and several times during this meeting, Kreisler offered Mr. Ricci a piece of advice that stuck with him for the rest of his life: 'Always play as you feel.' Mr. Ricci interpreted this to mean that if you have a certain style, you have to stick with it. I believe the photo of Kreisler and Mr. Ricci that appeared on the back cover of the original vinyl release was taken that very day in Foley's office." "
