History With Hilbert | Frisian and Frankish Coins from Dorestad (c. 600-750) @historywithhilbert | Uploaded October 2023 | Updated October 2024, 18 hours ago.
Dorestad was one of the major urban centres of early-medieval northern Europe, situated between the territories of the Frisians (along what is today the Dutch, Belgian, and German coastline), and that of the Franks further inland. Some amazing coins have been unearthed there, dating from Roman times at the earliest, and in such quantities that there can be no doubt that this was the site of the famous Frankish mint at Dorestad.
