Friendship has always been a layered concept for me. I have people I call friends who have been in my life since I was 9 years old—friendships spanning 30 years that I deeply cherish. I was blessed to take many friendships into many seasons of my life. But friendship looks different these days.
I’ve come to realize that the idea of a ‘best friend’ is something I no longer believe in. What is a best friend, really? It’s holding someone to a standard that they could never fully meet. Through my journey, I’ve learned that my true best friend is God. He’s the one who will never leave or forsake me (Hebrews 13:5).
But I’ve had my heart broken many times when it comes to friendships because I once believed that they were meant to last forever. The truth is, like any relationship, friendships can grow together, grow apart, or even grow apart to come back together again. And that’s okay.
This became more of a reality when I left NY 19 months ago, I had to cope with this new perspective on friendships, especially as an adult. I often wondered, ‘Will new friends leave me too?’ It took time and intentional steps to heal, rebuild, and grow a new circle. Here are 3 ways I learned to cope with friendship loss and rebuild:
✅Acceptance– It’s okay to grieve the loss of a friendship. Allow yourself to feel it, but don’t let it consume you. Everything has a season (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
✅Self-reflection– Ask yourself what you learned from that friendship. Was there a reason it phased out? Self-reflection helps you grow and prepare for future friendships.
✅Rebuilding– To rebuild your circle, seek like-minded people who are aligned with your current season. Find those who support your growth and walk with you in faith. Seek out people you can dive deeper with.
If you’ve experienced friendship loss or you’re rebuilding your circle, know that you’re not alone. Friendship, like any relationship, is about seasons, growth, and grace. ❤️
