The incident happened around 7 p.m. Sunday in the Des Plaines River near Independence Grove in Libertyville.

The Lake County Forest Preserve said the 31-year-old woman had entered the river to assist her son and, after helping him reach a family member, "she went underwater" and "became submerged."

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death in the Des Plaines River near Libertyville on Sunday evening. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Ron Davis, Lake County Forest Preserves’ police chief, said in a statement.'
