In this lecture, philosopher Freya Mathews outlines a "living cosmos panpsychism" as an interpretive alternative to the reductive materialism that she argues drives modern environmental destruction. By proposing that the universe is a self-realizing, cognitive system, she seeks to bridge the categorical divide between mind and matter, positioning human beings as finite modes of a larger cosmic connectivity. Mathews introduces two central concepts for inhabiting this reality: onto-poetics, a form of direct, communicative exchange between the individual and the cosmos through symbolic meaning, and deep law, a normative logic of accommodation and "least resistance" modeled on stable ecosystems. Ultimately, she suggests that experiencing the "astonishment" of onto-poetic encounter can shift human consciousness away from industrial anthropocentrism and into a holistic alignment with cosmic unfolding.
