As the Japanese assault gathered pace across Asia, the French capitulation in its colonies in Indochina was swift. But it was worse - the Vichy French collaborated with the Japanese against the Vietnamese people. Still, when war ended in 1945, the French wanted their colonies back - when they returned, they had US backing.
