MATERIALS:
Worsted weight yarn, (Bernat Premium, or Red Heart Super Saver, worked 2 strands) -OR- 1 strand Chunky yarn
(ww yarn: 5-12: 50 yds tan; 110 yds light color: 12-16: 55 yds tan; 115 yds light color; Adult: 60 yds tan, 120 yds light color)
One pair straight 9 mm knitting needles (US

INSTRUCTIONS: (Works bottom up.)

1.5-12 yrs: with 2 strands of ww yarn and 9 mm needles, cast on 36 stitches.
12-16 yrs: with 2 strands of ww yarn and 9 mm needles, cast on 40 stitches.
Adult: with 2 strands of ww yarn and 9 mm needles, cast on 44 stitches.
2. Work in ribbing, (knit 2, purl 2) for: 5-12 yrs: 8 rows; 12-16 yrs: 9 rows; Adult: 10 rows.
3.Work in stockinette stitch, (knit one row, purl one row), for: 5-12 yrs: 14 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.
12-16 yrs: 16 rows, cast off with a long yarn end.
Adult: 18 rows. Cast off with a long yarn end.
Thread the yarn end into a needle, weave through the last row of stitches, passing through every 4th stitch,pull to gather up and close the top of the hat, take several stitches to secure, sew the back seam of the hat.

MAKE THE OPTIONAL TIES:
Cut 3 lengths of yarn approx. 1 yard long.
Pass through a stitch along the bottom of the hat.
Pull through until all 6 lengths are even, divide into 3 groups of 2, braid the strands.
Tie an overhand knot in the yarn, and cut the ends evenly to form tassels.
