"This song was originated from that there war when they brought in convicts to try to mine the coal, take the jobs away from the men that had families there...Some of the soldiers, 500 come in there...and they tore down, they burned up about three stockades, and one was built under a railroad trestle and they tore it down, they went in wanting to burn the bridge...But finally the men, they got the prison labor out...This 'Coal Creek March' originated from down there about that trouble they had."
"They had some labor troubles down in Tennessee and the men had been out on a strike, and the state or the government or something brought in the convicts to try to run the mines with the convict labor. And the people there tore it all up and turned them all loose, and they had the state militia or the guards...and they played up and down the road and the song they called 'Coal Creek March'...And there was a song made about it, I have never got the words of it."
