Hi friends! Today I like to share with you the famous Prelude in b-minor op.28 nr.6 by one of the most beloved composers for the piano: Frédéric Chopin.

This prelude has a pretty dark tonality both musically and key-wise. B-Minor is often chosen by composers to express tragedy and sorrow, like in Tschaikovsky‘s 6th Symphony or Bach‘s Mass in b-minor. However, I wouldn’t consider this Prelude tragic but to some degree expressing grief. The main character here is the left hand with ascending melodies while the right hand has slightly changing chords that seem to float. You get the feeling that the music is searching directions but doesn’t seem to find its way.

The 24 Preludes are a piano cycle by Frederic Chopin (1810-1849). He composed this work between 1836 and 1839 and dedicated it to Camille Pleyel a friend who was publisher and concert organizer.

This piano cycle is one of the peaks of Chopin's work as a composer and artist. He continued the tradition of his deeply venerated master in heaven Johann Sebastian Bach.

The continuation is to compose one piece in each of the 24 keys. The innovation of Chopin is to reinvent the Prelude as form suffcient by itself and not as a simple piece before the polyphone Fugue that mostly followed in Bach's "Preludes and Fugues". Each Prelude in Chopin's "24 Preludes" has a very distinct character. So, Chopin helped the emancipation of this particular genre which was continued by Sergej Rachmaninow.
