Born in Hyde Park New York in 1882 to James Roosevelt and his second wife, Sara Ann Delano, Franklin D. Roosevelt or FDR grew up in a wealthy, high society family of extreme privilege and birthright. His father, a prominent businessman and Bourbon Democrat, once took Franklin to meet then sitting President Grover Cleveland, who said to the youth, “My little man, I am making a strange wish to you. It is that you may never be President of the United States.”
Growing up, FDR learned to sail, shoot guns, play polo, tennis and golf, along with frequent trips to Europe, which gave him a conversant edge in both German and French. Homeschooled until age 14—save for a year of public school in Germany when he was nine—FDR enrolled in the prestigious Episcopal boarding school, Groton, where headmaster Endicott Peabody preached Christian values of helping those less fortunate and entering public service. Peabody would remain an important figure and influence in FDR’s life, even officiating at his wedding and visiting him during his long years as president.
After graduating Groton School with lackluster grades, FDR went on to Harvard College, where he joined Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and the Fly Club, which was a literary society within Alpha Delta Phi founded in 1836. An equally undistinguished student and athlete as he had been at Groton, FDR added to Harvard’s tapestry in other ways, becoming a school cheerleader and editor-in-chief of the Harvard Crimson daily newspaper, the later a position that required focus, energy and leadership ability.
Later in life, FDR recalled his Harvard years by saying, "I took economics courses in college for four years, and everything I was taught was wrong.”
While at Harvard, FDR proposed to Boston socialite Alice Sohier during his Sophomore year, and after Alice turned him down, he began courting his fifth cousin and childhood companion Eleanor, who was Teddy Roosevelt’s niece. Despite his mother’s early objections, FDR married Eleanor on March 17th of 1905, and since Eleanor’s father was deceased, FDR’s cousin President Teddy Roosevelt gave away the bride. Moving into Springwood Estate in Hyde Park—a gift from Franklin’s mother, along with a townhome in the city—Eleanor never felt at home in either house, however, she loved the family’s vacation home on Campobello Island in New Brunswick Canada, which was also a gift from FDR’s mother.
