Before renowned author Frank McCourt’s incredible rise to literary stardom, he escaped unbearable poverty on two continents to eventually graduate with an advanced degree from CUNY’s Brooklyn College in 1967. He spent the next three decades teaching English to New York City’s public-school students and combined that experience with his childhood hardship as inspiration for the memoir Angela’s Ashes that earned him the Pulitzer Prize in 1997.
