Frank and Lauren Kelly should have been jetting off to Australia for the Bathurst Rally, but when their flights were cancelled, a last-minute switch to the West Cork Rally was quickly organised.

The Clonakilty-based event is one of Kelly’s favourites, and “Baby Blue” remains a firm favourite with the south-west rallying fraternity.

An all-new Friday night town stage set the tone for a fantastic three-day event. Kelly went third-fastest in the two-wheel-drive category on the fever-pitched opener. An impact in his freshly rebuilt Ford Escort Mk2 damaged the rear quarter panel, but it didn’t dent the Moy man’s spirits. If anything, a battle-scarred Baby Blue gave Kelly the green light for full-commitment power-slides and classic rear-wheel-drive entertainment.

Up against an influx of Welsh Darrian T90s, Kelly climbed to second on the modified leaderboard. A challenge from fellow Escort pilot Michael Carbin set up a cracking battle, with Kelly sealing the runner-up spot thanks to a string of rapid times on Sunday’s final stages.
