In the summer of 1942, the war in North Africa hangs by a thread. As the legendary “Desert Fox,” Erwin Rommel, drives the British back to the gates of Egypt, victory seems within his grasp. Cairo is just days away. The British Eighth Army is reeling. Even Winston Churchill fears collapse. But at the dusty railway halt of El Alamein, the retreat stops.
Into this crisis steps an unlikely challenger: the prickly, unyielding Bernard Montgomery. Dismissed by some, doubted by Churchill, “Monty” rebuilds a broken army with iron discipline and relentless training. While Rommel gambles on speed and surprise, Montgomery prepares – methodically, psychologically, and ruthlessly.
