This video has a look at the four things that make the male world very different from the female world. We are erroneously taught that socialization is the main reason for our sex differences but this presentation will give you a very different research driven perspective.
Part One - Tom has a look at the latest research on Testosterone and how it impacts boys and men and creates a totally different world for them.
Part Two - Fueled by Testosterone, boys and men live in a hierarchical world that demands they strive for status. Yes, they can decline participation but that has powerful consequences.
Part Three - Once boys and men are fueled by testosterone and enter into the male hierarchy they are slotted into winners and losers by what scientists are now calling Precarious Manhood. This slotting mechanism creates a very different experience for boys and men much different from the world of women and girls. Yes, women are slotted into rank via their attractiveness but men are slotted into ranks on all their characteristics. Also, the consequences are very different. For women they are simply seen as less attractive but for men the consequence is that are no longer considered to be MEN.
Part Four - Once men and boys are fueled with testosterone, enter the male hierarchy and then are slotted into winners and losers via precarious manhood...they find that they are less likely to get support and understanding than women and girls. The research of Kurt Gray and Tania Reynolds on Moral Typecasting helps us understand that men and boys will be more likely to be seen as "agentic" and this means they are more likely to be ignored when in need. All the while they see women and girls getting the opposite. Now we know why, moral typecasting.
The world of boys and men is significantly different from that of women and girls and yet we live in a culture that devalues masculinity and takes the insane step of telling the boys they need to be more like the girls. Crazy stuff don't you think?
