And then there were four more Crested Partridge chicks, much to my delight! 😊😊😊😊
A week after the single chick was spotted, four newborns from a different set of parents joined in the fray. The single older chick took to joining in this brood whenever the whole family were out foraging. The former's parents were seen hanging around from time to time.
Mum was still brooding the four little ones whenever she took a break; these four chicks snugged right under her body, out of sight and safely protected. True to what is written in literature, these young chicks, estimated to be around 3-4 days old, were not feeding on their own. Instead they hung around their parents, waiting to be fed bill to bill.
Crested Partridges exhibit distinct sexual dimorphism. The dark bluish-green male sports an awesome-looking burgundy crest, complete with a white crown patch, while the pea-green female sports brown wing coverts but is crestless. Both genders have scarlet eye patches & red legs.
Their conservation status is listed as Vulnerable.
Crested Partridges are found in southern Thailand, southern Myanmar, Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
In Singapore, this species is housed at the Songs of the Forest aviary at Mandai Bird Paradise.
