Even with contemporary China—the People's Republic since 1949—a comprehensive understanding of China is crucial.
Contemporary China's development can be divided into five main periods:
1949-1978
1979-1991
1992-2002
2003-2012
2012-now
When did China's miracle begin? Not in 1979, but in 1949.
Western descriptions of China often begin with 1979, depicting the starting point of China's development. This approach attempts to attribute China's development to the West, or so-called "capitalism," thereby devaluing China's socialist elements.
This is, of course, a flawed description. 1949 was the year China truly started from scratch. By 1979, China was not an ordinary "developing country" or a "poor country," but a potential nation with a relatively complete overall industrial framework, especially a heavy industry framework—an "outlier" among developing countries.
So how was China's economic foundation established between 1949 and 1979?
It was built through two waves of industrialization: the 156 Projects that began in the early 1950s—a gift from Russia (the Soviet Union); and the 43 Projects that emerged in the 1970s—petrochemical, synthetic fiber, and fertilizer industry projects from the West (Japan, West Germany, the United States, and other European countries).
