Located in Southern Ohio between Cincinnati and Dayton, the discovery of Fort Ancient was so significant that an entire prehistoric culture was named after the place. However, it turned out that Fort Ancient was neither a fort or inhabited by the Fort Ancient Culture. It was much older than that.
Dating back 2,000 years, with over three miles of earthwork walls, Fort Ancient is the largest hilltop enclosure in the United States and a place that's mysteries are still being unlocked.
Built by the Hopewell Culture, Fort Ancient was likely used for a number of purposes, including a calendar, a place of ceremony, and a gathering place.
While the Fort Ancient Culture didn't build Fort Ancient, there are a number of unanswered mysteries about their culture as well. To get a better look at the Fort Ancient Culture, we traveled to one one of their ancient village sites, SunWatch.
In this video we take a look at both the Fort Ancient Culture and Fort Ancient Earthworks and Preserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
