Constructed as a timber stockade in 1856, the prison's stony exterior was built up over the next 60 years, using volcanic rock mined by the prisoners from Mt Eden itself.
The damp and rugged cells held inmates until 2011, when the last prisoners were moved next door to the new Mt Eden Corrections Facility.
Despite some bad memories, Newbold said it should become a museum.
