Letting nature take care of the notch by using a forked branch for a bow drill hearth. In really dry conditions this can be accomplished without removing any material from the fork; but there was still quite a bit of moisture in the bark so I removed the top layer of the hearth to increase the chances of success.

Hearth and Spindle: Big Leaf Maple
Bearing Block: Fatwood
Tinder Bundle: Dead Leaves
Bow String: Tarred Bankline
Knife: Ontario RD7 Bush
