The small town of Independence, Texas, was founded in 1835 and was the homesite of Baylor University - established in 1845. It was considered the wealthiest community in Texas with highly productive cotton plantations and everyone in the community supported all the local businesses.
With the Civil War, a fire in 1873, a tornado in 1882 and poor roads and no railroad, it was decided that the campus would be moved to Waco in 1886. This was the demise of the town, and the final blow was a hurricane which destroyed most of the town in 1900.
