Medieval Chinese maritime records show that the sea had a calendar.
At the center of this episode is Zhao Rugua—also known in older scholarship as Chau Ju-kua—whose thirteenth-century account describes a southwest-facing coast battered during the Southwest Monsoon and merchants preparing for their return voyage during the fourth or fifth moon. Then, the famous Zheng He whose journeys explicitly define the very same following of the monsoon seasons in both the South China Sea and Indian Ocean.
That small statement contains something extraordinary:
