When the bays were first studied scientifically in the 1930s, it became evident that the bays were elliptical and that they had a very restricted aspect ratio. This fact was ignored or conveniently forgotten when the origin of the bays was later attributed to the action of wind, waves, and freeze-thaw cycles.
