The Jeep Wagoneer stands out as the only large SUV to earn a 2024 TOP SAFETY PICK award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), outperforming its competitors, the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition. While the Wagoneer did well in maintaining survival space and airbag performance during the small overlap front crash tests, it fell short of the higher-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+ award due to inadequate protection for back seat passengers. Despite its good ratings, minor intrusions and injury risks were noted. The Tahoe and Expedition struggled more, showing significant footwell intrusions and structural failures, resulting in higher injury risks to both drivers and passengers.
In addition to the crash tests, the SUVs were evaluated for pedestrian crash avoidance, with the Wagoneer and Expedition earning good ratings, while the Tahoe only managed a marginal rating due to poor nighttime performance and inadequate headlights. The Wagoneer's headlight and pedestrian systems were effective, while the Tahoe's poor headlights contributed to its underperformance. Seat belt reminders and LATCH system ease of use also varied, with the Wagoneer and Tahoe performing well in LATCH ease of use but falling short in seat belt reminders. These evaluations highlight ongoing safety challenges and the potential for improvement in large SUV safety features.
