The more concentrated power becomes, the easier it is to protect. Like gravity, the bonds only become stronger as more material (i.e. wealth) is accumulated over time. The purpose of the #MeToo movement is not primarily punitive, but rather to give a voice to a group that has generally been marginalized for the benefit of an aristocratic minority. No one argues that sexual violence or sexual abuse aren’t real problems, we simply argue about whether there should be consequences. OR for whom we think consequences are acceptable. Are we talking about predators, or are we simply talking about “boys being boys”? This is both an economic and racial question. So are we talking about bad apples, or are we talking about the systemic rot of a system that encourages the naked expression of power as a tool of control. White Supremacy, Misogyny, Nationalism - by only representing one group, they allow their solutions to seem so much simpler, they allow natural human laziness to thwart progress. The simpler an ideology becomes, the easier it is to disseminate. The easier it is to disseminate, the more it will be mistaken for the majority.
INDECLINE has a background in film (amongst other clandestine activities). Some of those that we grew up loving- Tarantino, for example - have sat back and allowed an environment hostile to a whole gender to calcify into the mechanism of a business. What’s scarier? The actions of Weinstein, who is one man? Or the collective decision to ignore his bad behavior for the sake of the system? It’s not that we want to burn down the house just to get rid of a couple rats, but we refuse to accept any longer that the only way to prove your innocence is to drown. Sometimes the first step is to listen. Not every script is a feel-good story. At least not at first. Sometimes listening is acknowledging our own culpability, giving the agency back to the victims, so that they might teach us how to move forward into a future where everyone is included, equally. Identity politics aren’t about silencing those who already have a voice, they are about teaching a common courtesy, so that all of us might speak our minds, and out of this discussion we might find solutions that are necessary to survive in a future of finite resources, where cooperation is going to be so much more useful than domination.
The system is old. It is decaying under the weight of its own hypocrisy. It will not survive. Will change be incremental, or will it happen all at once? Can we build a future out of love, together, or have we become so much beasts of burden that suffering is the only language we understand, that catastrophe is the only agent of change we trust? The choice is still ours to make, friends. Choose wisely.
