In June 2024, CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator conducted an investigation of an unidentified shipwreck off the coast of NSW.
The objective of the investigation was to collect data and imagery to help identify the wreck. The shipwreck was first mapped using RV Investigator’s multibeam echosounders (sonar systems) and then inspected with a special drop camera system.
The data and vision collected were shared with project partners, Heritage NSW and The Sydney Project, and the wreck was identified as the MV Noongah.
The MV Noongah was lost at sea in 1969 with the tragic loss of 21 of the 26 crew onboard. This video shows the vision of the wreck captured by the vertical (downward facing) camera on the drop camera system.
